Instructions Following Scaling and Root Planing

  • During the first 24 hours, you may notice sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures.
  • Wait until the numbness from the anesthesia has completely worn off before consuming hot foods or drinks.
  • Refrain from intense physical activities and avoid very hot or spicy foods for the initial 24 hours.
  • A small amount of bleeding is normal after a deep cleaning, but if you experience heavy bleeding, please contact our office.
  • You may use ibuprofen or acetaminophen as needed, following the dosage instructions on the package or those given by your doctor.
  • Rinsing with warm salt water—about one teaspoon of salt in an eight-ounce glass of water—three times daily can provide relief.
  • Brush and floss gently after a deep cleaning, returning to your regular routine once any discomfort has subsided. Follow any additional instructions given by our office during your visit.
  • Be sure to take all prescribed medications as directed.
  • Avoid smoking for at least 72 hours.
