Periodontal Evaluations Can Save Your Smile
A Brighter Smile Starts Below the Surface
Do you experience bleeding gums, bad breath, or loose teeth? These could be signs of periodontal disease, an infection that affects the tissue that supports your teeth. If left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss and even impact your overall health. We offer a gentle and compassionate approach to periodontal care, with laser dentistry at the forefront, to make your experience as comfortable as possible.
What sets Dr. Malloy and Dr. Ferrin apart is our philosophy that we’ll always treat our patients the way we’d treat outselves. This means that we will always take the time to listen to your concerns, answer your questions, and develop a treatment plan that is tailored to your individual needs—you can trust that we have your best interests at heart. As the only practice in the area specializing in periodontics, we also offer a unique level of expertise and commitment to your care!
What to Expect During Your Periodontal Evaluation
We understand the importance of a healthy smile and the impact it has on your overall well-being. That’s why we offer comprehensive periodontal evaluations to patients in Medford, Oregon, and the surrounding areas. You’ll also be relieved to know that we’re committed to saving your natural teeth whenever possible. Laser dentistry is a regenerative process that can, to some extent, reverse your periodontal damage.
During your appointment, we will assess:
- Your Teeth: We’ll examine your teeth and any restorations you might have, including dental fillings, dental implants, crowns, and dentures, and note the position of your teeth and their closeness to one another.
- Your Plaque: The amount and location of any plaque and/or tartar will be assessed.
- Your Gums: Using a dental probe, we will measure the depth of your gum pockets and see how well your gums attach to your teeth. Any bleeding that occurs during the probing process, as well as any inflammation of your gums, will also be recorded.
- Your Bite: We’ll then observe your bite and look to see how your teeth fit together. Our team will also assess for signs of tooth movement or loose teeth.
- Your Bone Structure: We’ll examine the bone in and around your mouth and take X-rays, if necessary, to help evaluate the quality of bone in your upper and lower jaw areas and to determine if any bone loss has occurred.
- Your Risk Factors: We’ll ask you a variety of questions to assess your risk factors for periodontal disease, including age, tobacco use, if anyone else in your family has this disease, or if you have another systemic condition that may be linked to it.
Did You Know?
The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) recommends that you receive a comprehensive periodontal evaluation, or CPE, annually to determine if you have or are at risk for periodontal disease. By assessing your periodontal health yearly, you and your dental professional will know how healthy your teeth and gums are and will be better able to assess if you need additional treatment.
